How to Cleanse Your Face Properly: Gentle Best Practices

Cleansing removes sunscreen, make-up, sweat and the day's build-up so the rest of your routine can do its job. The aim is clean skin that still feels comfortable, never tight or squeaky.

How often?

  • Evening: cleanse every night. This is the most important one, because you are removing sunscreen, pollution and make-up.
  • Morning: many people do well with a splash of lukewarm water, or a gentle cleanser if their skin is oily or they used a rich night cream.
  • After a workout: rinse sweat off soon, especially before you do face exercises.

The gentle method

  1. Wash your hands first.
  2. Wet your face with lukewarm water. Very hot water can dry the skin.
  3. Massage a small amount of cleanser for 30 to 60 seconds, using light circular strokes. Treat it as a mini massage, not a scrub.
  4. Rinse thoroughly, including the hairline and jaw.
  5. Pat dry with a clean towel. Do not rub.
  6. Apply moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp.

Double cleansing

If you wear make-up or heavy sunscreen, start with an oil or balm cleanser to dissolve it, then follow with a gentle water-based cleanser. It is optional on bare-skin days.

Choosing a cleanser

  • Dry or sensitive skin: creamy or milky cleansers without strong fragrance.
  • Oily or combination skin: light gel cleansers.
  • All skin types: avoid anything that leaves your skin feeling stripped or tight.

Common mistakes

  • Scrubbing hard or using rough cloths.
  • Over-cleansing, such as several times a day.
  • Skipping cleansing at night, especially after a day in sunscreen.
  • Using the same dirty towel for days.
  • Forgetting to moisturise afterwards.

A cleansing moment

Cleansing is also a natural pause. Drop your shoulders, soften your jaw and breathe. Then continue with your evening routine. If you use tools, always start with clean skin and a clean tool.

The takeaway: gentle, lukewarm and consistent beats strong and frequent. If your skin feels tight after washing, your routine is too harsh.
