Face Fitness for Cheeks and the Mid-Face: Four Moves to Try

Face Fitness for Cheeks and the Mid-Face: Four Moves to Try

The mid-face is the part of the face most people want to focus on first: the cheeks, the smile line and the area under the eyes. It is also the zone where technique matters most, because the muscles that raise the cheeks can, if overworked on their own, deepen creases around the mouth.

That is why our house rule is: pair every cheek lift with a release for the mouth corners and neck.

The muscles behind your smile

  • Zygomaticus major and minor pull the corners of the mouth up and out.
  • Levator labii superioris lifts the upper lip.
  • Buccinator is the cheek muscle you use to blow and chew.

1. Cheek Lifter

Make a long "O" with your mouth, lips tucked over your teeth. Anchor the skin on top of the cheekbones with your fingertips, then smile upwards toward your temples. Hold 5 seconds, 10 repetitions.

2. Apple Cheek Lift

Smile wide with your lips closed and push the fullest part of the cheeks up and out. Keep the skin under your fingers flat. Hold 5 seconds, 8 to 10 repetitions.

3. Balloon Cheek

Inflate your cheeks and move the air from the left cheek to the upper lip, to the right cheek, to the lower lip. Do 30 seconds clockwise and 30 seconds anticlockwise. This tones and gently stretches the inner cheek.

4. Fish Face

Suck your cheeks inwards to make a fish face, then smile with the corners of your mouth while keeping the hollow. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and release, 6 repetitions.

Always add a release

After your cheek work, spend 30 seconds on a mouth-corner release (a tiny smile against gentle downward finger pressure) and a neck stretch such as the Upward Neck Kiss. This balances the muscles that pull the other way and keeps your face looking relaxed, not strained.

Add a tool, if you like

Many of our members follow their mid-face workout with a few minutes of cupping or gua sha. See Sculpt and Unwind for the ball attachment, or the Rebel Cup for gentle suction massage.

The takeaway: lift with control, release with care, and let your fingers keep the skin flat.

Keep pressure light around the eyes and mouth. Stop if your jaw clicks, locks or hurts, or if a neck movement makes you dizzy. Skip resistance work on any area treated with botulinum toxin in the last six months, and check with your doctor or dermatologist first if you have an active skin condition, jaw-joint pain, facial nerve problems, or recent facial surgery or injectables. Face fitness is a wellness practice, not medical advice.
